Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos aren’t shy about discussing even the most uncomfortable topics in front of their live audience. Recently, the couple, who have been married for nearly 30 years, dove into the subject of “gray divorces” on *Live With Kelly and Mark*.
During the October 11 episode, Kelly, 54, revealed that she had been reading an article on the rise of gray divorces—divorces that happen among couples over 50. She shared that when she brought it up to Mark, he got defensive, asking, “Why are you reading that article?”
Kelly explained she had come across the article while waiting at the airport, noting the statistics behind the trend: in 1990, only 8.7% of marriages among people over 50 ended in divorce, but by 2019, that number had risen to 36%.
As Kelly talked about the reasons behind gray divorces—such as empty nest syndrome, infidelity, and health issues—Mark joked that Kelly would always take care of him, even in his old age. “You’ll change my diapers,” he quipped, to which Kelly responded, “Of course I will. I do it all the time.”
Kelly was particularly struck by the article because of how soothing the narrator’s voice was, jokingly admitting, “I found myself thinking, ‘Oh, I want one,’ until I realized, this is a dark subject matter!”
Despite the lighthearted conversation, Kelly reassured everyone that divorce isn’t on the table for them, pointing out that she and Mark, 53, still share a lot in common. The couple, who have three children—Michael, 27, Lola, 23, and Joaquin, 21—continue to publicly express their love and affection for one another. For Kelly’s recent birthday, Mark posted a heartfelt Instagram message, calling her “Sexy” and promising, “The best is yet to come.”
Kelly and Mark have been open about their relationship over the years, often making playful comments about their married life. Their light-hearted banter and strong connection show no signs of slowing down, even with jokes about gray divorces in the mix!
